Radio Teleswitch Service Switch-Off – What You Need to Know
The Radio Teleswitch Service (RTS), which controls the charging of electric storage heaters and hot water systems in some homes, will be switched off on 30 June 2025. RTS meters are commonly used with Economy 7, Economy 10 and ‘Total Heating, Total Control’ tariffs to switch between peak and off-peak electricity rates.
This means tenants using an RTS meter will need a replacement meter to continue using their heating and hot water efficiently. Energy suppliers are responsible for contacting affected customers to arrange an upgrade, but we encourage tenants to get in touch with their provider as soon as possible to ensure they are prepared.
What Happens If You Don’t Replace Your Meter?
If your RTS meter is not replaced before the switch-off, it could cost you significantly more to heat your home and use hot water. Other potential issues include:
⚠️ Your heating and hot water may be permanently switched on, leading to very high electricity bills.
⚠️ Your system may stop working entirely, leaving you with no heating or hot water.
⚠️ Your storage heaters may charge at the wrong time, potentially increasing your energy costs.
⚠️ Your electricity supplier may struggle to bill you correctly, leading to higher charges.
To avoid these issues, it’s important to act now and make sure your supplier has plans in place to upgrade your meter before the deadline.
